Bella Ciao

Bella Ciao is among the most popular folk songs in the world and boasts numerous versions in several languages. An anthem of the Resistance towards the last years of the Second War, its lyrics and melody were based on pre-existing models (e.g. the epic-lyric song Fiore di Tomba). It gained some popularity among the rice fields songs and thanks to an ex mondina, Giovanna Daffini, it would enter the folk revival repertoire giving the name to the show “Bella Ciao” that was presented at the Spoleto Festival in 1964. Since the revolts of 1968, the song has played a key musical role in all movements across Europe and is sung at marches as a protest anthem.
