Festival of the roses 1965
The second edition of the Festival of the Roses, once again held in Rome at the Hotel Cavalieri Hilton (October 14-16), confirmed its prestige as an autumn showcase for record production. The competition was divided into two sections, one for veterans, the other for newcomers, accompanied on stage by the two orchestras of Bruno Canfora and Giampiero Boneschi. The novelty of this edition was that the veterans presented their new 45 rpms, performing the songs of both sides on the first two nights of the festival: the jury then decided which of the two tracks made it to the final evening. This formula produced several surprises, as in some cases the B side won the honours, catching record producers off their guard. And so it turned out that songs such as Sergio Endrigo’s ‘Teresa’ and Dino’s ‘Il ragazzo di ghiaccio’ didn’t make the final. You can hear these as well as others that were eliminated at the end of this playlist, after the songs of the young talents. Orietta Berti won the festival with ‘Voglio dirti grazie’, while a special Turismo Europeo prize went to Bruno Lauzi for ‘Ti ruberò’. The Critics’ Prize, finally, was awarded to the young singer Loredana Bufalieri for ‘Tu che sei lassù’.
