Constituting the Italian Army mountain troops, the Alpini distinguished themselves especially during the First World War. That experience gave rise to a vast repertoire of polyvocal songs addressing topics related to the war, such as the hardships and brutalities experienced in the forbidding ice and the snowy landscape, away from home. The stirring patriotic spirit and the attachment to one’s roots that characterize them have contributed to the survival of many of these songs in the modern repertoires of several choirs throughout the country.
