Humorous songs

The season of variety theatre and curtain-raisers produced a fair number of so-called humorous songs, songs intended to entertain the audience, make them smile and fill the stage in the interval between one artist and another. For this reason, many comic singers were also sophisticated comic actors, and in their case, the humorous songs became an integral part of their shows. The record companies gave a lot of space to humorous songs, and often, on their 78s, even included small monologues or dialogues by the comedian of the moment (often supported by his favourite straight man). This is the case, in this playlist, of Ettore Petrolini, Erminio Macario, Gilberto Govi and Aldo Fabrizi. With some of these artists, there is little information. They often performed using only a surname or first name. The only testimonials are the many recordings they made over their careers, which bear witness, beyond the famous names, to the widespread popularity of this type of song in the first half of the century.
