Continuando a guardar la Luna playlist

Continuing to look at the moon

This is the second collection dedicated to those songs that speak of the moon, which this time focuses exclusively on the 1930s, a decade which was particular prolific and important for the evolution of so-called light music and of world record production in general. Here we present, among others, two songs that already appeared in the previous collection: 'Blue Moon’, the great sensation by Richard Rodgers, translated into Italian as ‘Luna malinconica’ by Alfredo Bracchi, and ‘Notte senza Luna’, which in some ways represents the antithesis of the American hit. This time the interpreters are, respectively, Miscel (Michele Cimato, brother of Gabrè) and Mario Latilla, an important singer and showman of the 30s and father of Gino, an equally famous performer of the 50s. Also of note are the pieces ‘Luna lucente’ and ‘Io e la luna’, here presented by two great opera stars, Enzo De Muro Lomanto and Tito Schipa. Other notable, rare pieces include two recordings by two quartets of the 30s: the Quartetto Jazz Funaro – founded by Giuseppe Funaro, the renowned cellist and bass player of the Italian jazz scene who met a tragic end  (he was deported to Auschwitz, where he died in 1945) – plays an Italian version of ‘Luna lucente’, while the Quartetto Mida presents ‘Luna su Capri’, a piece written by Roberto Murolo, who formed part of the quartet before going on to become the favorite son of the Italian public in the 50s. Other icons of the 30s include the sisters of the Trio Vocale Lescano, who here form the chorus that accompanies Gino Del Signore and Giacomo Osella, two singers of the public broadcasting system EIAR in its early years, in ‘Fiore di luna’ and ‘Sui monti della luna’. Meanwhile, actress Barbara Monis, who was very active in the world of music during the 30s, sings ‘Raggio di luna’. The playlist moves on to the duet of Gallo and Kramer, made up of the accordionist Francesco ‘Gallo’ Gorni and his son Kramer: the latter, going by the name Gorni Kramer, would soon become popular as a composer, arranger and the orchestra director, appearing in television as well. Here, father and son present ‘Notte di luna’, one of their many recordings from the early 30s. Enjoy!
