With over five hundred romances for voice and piano, Francesco Paolo Tosti was the most representative composer of the genre. Some of these were penned by illustrious writers such as Antonio Fogazzaro and Gabriele D'Annunzio, also originating from the Abruzzo . Tosti spent much of his life in London where – thanks to the support of Gaetano Braga, another author of romances – was a singing teacher at the court of Queen Victoria and later of Edward VII.
