Hully Gully & Surf

Musically speaking, the 1960's were full of new rhythms and new dances. The Hully gully and Surf spread throughout Italy between 1963 and 1964, becoming big hits at private dance parties and especially on summer dance floors, from "baleras" to dance halls and various other outdoor seaside venues. In 1959, the American Olympics published a song entitled "Hully Gully", which kicked off the dance's popularity, very simple to learn and so easy to perform: a series of steps forward, sideways and backwards that the took dancers, who had no direct contact, around the whole dance floor. The Surf also had origins in North America, both in the rhythm (derived from rock'n'roll and speeded up for dancing) and in the dance moves, which mimed the movements of Californian surfers balancing on a surfboard when riding the waves. The American Dick Dale was the first to have success with surf music, up to the Beach Boys, who did their own version of it, with great vocal arrangements.
